When you want to learn more about a particular subject, you turn to the experts. In Episode 56, that's exactly what we did when we sat down with Andy Rathman, Brewmaster at The St. George Brewing Company. We talked to Andy about his early start in brewing, why he decided to make a career change to get into the industry, how he gained much of his early experience in Germany, and so much more!
Andy's background in engineering had nothing to do with his interest in becoming a brewer. In fact, it was his desire for a career change and his love of beer that led him to pursue what would become a career in brewing. Now, for the last 22 years, he has worked as the Brewmaster for The St. George Brewing Company in Hampton, VA, the oldest craft brewery in Hampton Roads, and the second-oldest craft brewery in all of Virginia.
We had a lot of fun talking to Andy about his adventures and apprenticeships in Germany, traveling from brewery to brewery in his Volkswagen van, accompanied only by his dog. He also talked to us about his time spent at the UC Davis Master Brewer program, and how all of his experience developed his passion for traditional, four-ingredient beer that the St George Brewing Company has come to be known for.
